A CRES Amateur Radio Club monthly meeting was held Wednesday, April 21st, 1999 in the Franklin Room, over lunch. The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Scott/K9RV at 11:30 AM. Those in attendance were: K9RV, KC8LUV, N8IQT, W9PMZ, N8VQU, KA8ZRT, WD8CZG, WB9PXH, KD8WK, KD8ZG, K8RSP, K8GZ, and KC8HIH. The first order of business was to discuss the proposed new Lucent policy prohibiting transmitters in Bldg 30. Word circulated recently on the cb-hams mailing list that such a policy would soon be forthcoming. Carl Bohman/W9PMZ was present when the policy was being formulated and described the details and the reasoning behind it to the club: With the large amount of cellular products being produced by the plant, there is increasing interference in the LAC (cellular testing area) from outside sources. Carl had requested that non-frequency hopping transmitters be prohibited in and around the area of the LAC. This escallated into a proposed general prohibition of transmitters, including ham hand-held tranceivers. Under the policy, only pre-approved and authorized transmitting equipment will be allowed in Bldg 30, and authorization will only be for Lucent business purposes. Carl indicated that the people responsible for the policy had been informed that the policy, as proposed, far exceeded what was needed to resolve his problem. The final determination of policy is apparently now in Ed Hines hands, and it is anticiapted he will act on it shortly. Several people questioned whether the interference problem was being used as an excuse to prohibit cell phones, which are being used by employees while on duty while they work. Indeed, how would prospective customers react when told they could not use their cell phones while visiting Lucent. Questions were also raised about SkyWarn and the Emergency Response Team. It was pointed out that, if strictly enforced, one could not walk from their car to a front office with a handheld which was turned off according to the new policy. Jerry Scott put together a small team to draft a letter to Ed Heins expressing the Club's concerns. Members of the team include: Jerry, Art Grandle/KD8ZG, Rob Stampfli/KD8WK, and Dave Nowocin/WB9PXH. We will circulate the letter when it is forthcoming. In other business, the Treasurer reported $23.29 in petty cash, and $876.16 in Telhio. The meeting minutes from the previous meeting were accepted, with thanks to Rex Mykrantz/N8VQU who took them in the Secretary's absence last month. Jerry indicated that he is still trying to collect the key from our former Trustee to give to our new Trustee, Art Grandle. Also, the dipole is still not working correctly, and Mike Stansbery is addressing this. Art Grandle reported that 15 people were tested at last Saturday's VE Exams, resulting in one new extra class ham, one general, four no-code techs, and one tech plus. Thanks to all involved. It was pointed out that Tricia Kovacs/KC8HIH was not at last month's meeting because she was getting married. Congrats to Tricia and her husband. Some discussion ensued about how to best come up with a list of Amateur Radio operators working at Lucent in Columbus. The Secretary only compiles a list of club members. However, if you know of non- club-member hams who work at Lucent, please notify the Secretary (rob@w8zpf.cb.lucent.com) and we'll try to start a list. Gordy Lashley/WD8CZG indicated the CRES-ARC corporate web page had been moved. Rob Stampfli indicated he couldn't get to the new web page. Gordy agreed to publish a URL along with the IP address of the new server. A pseudo-fox hunt is tentatively scheduled for the late morning of May 1. Instead of DFing, to find the fox, you must listen on the repeater and solve a series of riddles. Afterwards, we'll all get together for lunch at the fox's location. More information should be forthcoming soon. The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 PM. Gordy Lashley gave an informative talk on the configuration and use of the W8ZPF repeater afterwards.
