The CRES Amateur Radio Club held its fourth general membership meeting of the year on Thursday, 15 August 2013, at the New Albany branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. The following members and guests were present: K8LJ Bob Kenyon - President K8AX Dave Brown - Vice President KD8WK Rob Stampfli - Secretary W3CRZ Bob Cartwright - Treasurer KD8ZG Art Grandle - VE Liaison K8RSP Dave Woolf - Past President, Repeater Trustee K8TX Dan Merrick N8WL Steve Katz K8NQ Weldon Mathews WA8LBZ Al Mecozzi KD8RTP John Buck N8OGI Greg Stout KD8VJX Jerry Griffin N4DLR George Foy KD8DZ Mike Mickelson W8UL John Tipka WA8PGE Fred Sass K8MZ Dick Bennett KC8DJR George Kinder WB8ABE Phil Wilcox KD8OQA Martin Hohl N9CX Bill Erwin KD8LUW Duane Vanone N4HAI Thomas Foy K8LE Andy Elliott KD8TFR Tony Vitali The President called the meeting to order promptly at 7 PM. New members and guests were introduced. The Secretary's report for the July General Meeting was accepted. The Treasurer reported the club has $9058.50 in the bank and has 51 paid members. The VE Liaison reported that the CRES VE-Team tested 20 members at the Aladdin hamfest this month. Six people passed the Tech exam, seven upgraded to General, two to Extra, and five people did not pass. The next test session will likely be in December at the Parkview Presbyterian Church. The Repeater Trustee reported the repeater is basically in good shape. There is a problem with the circuit that reports which receiver is being used. In addition, there has been a lot of unexplained inbound calls to the repeater's phone line. K8LJ reported that Echolink is working OK. The club was offered and accepted the donation of two high-power UPS units. One will be placed at WD8TA's home to power the Echolink hardware. The other may be deployed at the repeater site to give us some measure of emergency power. It is unclear whether the site currently has corporate emergency power. K8LJ next queried the membership about interest in participating in this year's OSPOTA contest. N8WL commented that he had received negative feedback on holding a picnic in conjunction with the event as many people's spouses did not want to travel that far, so the picnic option was removed. There was little interest in OSPOTA, so the club will not participate this year, except for the QRP SIG, which will likely operate in the contest, although probably not from Buckeye Lake. K8LJ asked for feedback on the goals people had thus far achieved from the list he solicited at our first meeting. Several folks told of meeting their ham goals such working a certain number of states or countries. Bob also shared his personal goals: He makes at least one contact per day and one CW contact, he is working to keep the web pages up to date, he is putting together a Presidential Greeting for the web, and he is erecting a tower to house his StepIR antenna. The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 PM. Respectfully submitted, Rob Stampfli, KD8WK, Secretary After the meeting, the club had three guest speakers: + Bob Cartwright, W3CRZ, gave a wrap-up report on this year's Field Day event where the club had bested its previous record for points, going back to 1990. + Art Grandle, KD8ZG, gave a talk on his efforts to restore a Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio he had purchased for $10. + Weldon Mathews, K8NQ, gave a talk on the structure and operation of the Licking County ARES, touching on many topics of emergency preparedness in general.
