The CRES Amateur Radio Club held its fifth general membership meeting of the year on Thursday, 22 October 2015, at the New Albany branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. The following members and guests were present: K8LJ Bob Kenyon - President N4HAI Tom Foy - Vice President KD8WK Rob Stampfli - Secretary W3CRZ Bob Cartwright - Treasurer KD8ZG Art Grandle - VE Liaison K8RSP Dave Woolf - Immediate Past President KC8ARZ Jim Bingham WB8ZTP Mark Pogany KD8RTP John Buck N8SY Scott Yonally W8NFT Doug Gibbs K8NU Carl Yaffey K8MP Joe Papworth N8WL Steve Katz K8NQ Weldon Mathews N9CX Bill Erwin WA8LBZ Al Mecozzi K8TX Dan Merrick KC8JPM Dennis Brewster KM4ADY Douglas Olivo W8JPF Joe Fischer President K8LJ called the meeting to order promptly at 6:45 PM. The Secretary's report from the August 2015 meeting was accepted with thanks to N8WL for taking the notes in the secretary's absence. The Treasurer reported the club has spent $1,597 in the past few months on the new repeater and ancillary equipment. The club currently has $6,988.27 in its treasury and 53 paid members. KD8ZG reported the VE team will conduct an exam session at 9:00 AM on Saturday, December 5th, at the Parkview Presbyterian Church in Reynoldsburg. Breakfast will be at 7:30 AM at the Reynoldsburg IHOP for those interested. K8RSP reported that he is continuing to work on understanding the programming of the controller and the new Yaesu Fusion repeaters. He invited interested parties to assist him, and he can especially use help with fabricating the cables required. He would like to eventually put one of the Fusion units on the air temporarily as a cross-band repeater at his domicile, in order to get the kinks worked out before it replaces our existing W8ZPF/R. K8LJ noted that the Fusion repeaters come with a built-in rudimentary controller. K8LJ reported that Tate Antrim/WD8TA has tightened up the squelch on the EchoLink transceiver, resolving problems which have been plaguing the EchoLink interface. K8LJ threw the floor open to discussion as to why participation in the Sunday CRES net has been dwindling of late, especially on the RF side (most of the last few week's checkins have been over EchoLink. Members suggested that perhaps with the earlier sunset the net time was too late for those having the go to work the following morning. We may try moving the net to an earlier time or a different day. Doug Olivo/KM4ADY, a first time attendee, introduced himself to the group, as did Joe Fischer/W8JPF and Joe Papworth/K8MP. The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM, after which N4HAI introduced our guest speaker, Joe Papworth/K8MP, who delivered an interesting talk on CW contesting, including stories from his early ham career, which in turn provoked additional remembrances from the audience.
